First created in the mid 1700’s — you know, back when men were men and hoecakes were hoecakes — these delicious morsels were made from cornmeal, salt and water or milk. They were typically fried on the flat top of an iron hoe (yup, the farming implement) that had been heated in an open fire. Hoecakes are still around today — though no longer cooked on a hoe — and are served like pancakes with butter, honey or syrup.
