It’s Earth Day today, so we’re celebrating the only way we know how: with wine! And what better way to toast Mother Nature than with a bottle that causes minimal impact on the planet’s fragile ecosystem.
Of course, it’s easy to look for a wine with the word "organic’" emblazoned on the bottle, but the designation usually only refers to how the grapes were cultivated. Instead, opt for a wine made by a small producer who quietly farms his or her grapes sustainably without needing to advertise it, and carries those green practices into the winery during production. In other words, wines made with no fancy technology or additives (as most conventional wines are). Just grapes and love.

- Château LaGrolet Cotes de Bourg 2008, France ($12): When people think of Bordeaux, they don’t think of small, biodynamic producers. Or $12 bottles, for that matter. This uncomplicated, medium-bodied red is full of dark berry fruit with a touch of minerality.
- Señorio de P. Peciña Joven 2009, Spain ($12): This young Rioja is fresh and fruity, with a subtle barnyard note, and is best enjoyed with a light chill. It’s made from organically grown grapes fermented naturally with little else added.
- Bera & Figli Arcese Bianco 2009, Italy ($15): Made with the rustic white Piedmont grape Arneis, grown organically and in harmony with the earth, this wine is dry, deeply aromatic, and vibrant as all get out.
- Quivira Fig Tree Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2009, USA ($18): The Sonoma vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic and named for a 130-year-old fig tree that lives in the middle of it. It makes a crisp, unoaked white with great acidity, and notes of citrus and melon.
- Kuyen Antiyal 2008, Chile ($22): This Maipo Valley blend of Syrah, Carmenère, and Cabernet Sauvignon is all black cherry, leather, and pepper in the mouth. It’s named for the moon and made from grapes grown biodynamically.
